Panel during Tech Inclusion Conference 2015

100 Solutions to Diversity and Inclusion in tech.

Since the inaugural Tech Inclusion Conference in 2015 we have received and granted over 100+ scholarship applications to attendees. For each scholarship application we ask one simple question “What solutions would you like to see for diversity and inclusion in tech?” Below is a series leading up to the 2016 Tech Inclusion Conference of “100+ Solutions to Diversity and Inclusion in tech”. The Theme for Tech Inclusion 2016 Conference is Inclusive and Sustainable Innovation and will be held October 26th — 27th at the Innovation Hangar in San Francisco. Tech Inclusion Conference is presented by Google for Entrepreneurs. The conference will feature a career fair, a startup showcase and an tech innovation demo hall. Early Bird tickets are on sale now.

Solution: Culture Change, Teaching Computer Science and Recruiting

It is essential that this conference concerns many of the root problems that are causing the lack of diversity and feelings of isolation in many members who are statistically minorities in the tech industry. For example, discussions around negative biases during hiring practices must be discussed and solved to ensure that the pool of qualified, minority candidates are provided with an equitable opportunity to attain the job.

Moreover, I would ideally like to see that the companies who complain of issues regarding a lack of candidates donate at least 5–10% of their working hours to volunteering with organizations trying to address the pipeline issue by teaching computer science in neighborhoods and schools who do not have the resources to teach computer science.

Lastly, I think that a culture change is necessary for people who feel isolated in their companies by addressing workplace microaggressions, equitable skill development, and a deep consideration of diverse cultural values rather than the dominant narrative.
