Tech Inclusion Solution: Day 28: Having An Empathic Approach To Understanding Intersectionality In Tech

100 Solutions to Diversity and Inclusion in tech.

Since the inaugural Tech Inclusion Conference in 2015 we have received and granted over 100+ scholarship applications to attendees. For each scholarship application we ask one simple question “What solutions would you like to see for diversity and inclusion in tech?” Below is a series leading up to the 2016 Tech Inclusion Conference of “100+ Solutions to Diversity and Inclusion in tech”. The Theme for Tech Inclusion 2016 Conference is Inclusive and Sustainable Innovation and will be held October 26th — 27th at the Innovation Hangar in San Francisco. Tech Inclusion Conference is presented by Google for Entrepreneurs. The conference will feature a career fair, a startup showcase and an tech innovation demo hall. Early Bird tickets are on sale now.

Solution: Having An Empathic Approach To Understanding Intersectionality In Tech

I believe that we need to include intersectionality in our understanding of what it means to be inclusive in tech.

I’ve joined initiatives promoting women in tech that don’t account for the fact that women are not all in the same causal position. Some face additional challenges because they are poor, lgbt, and other identity vectors, and women of different ethnicities face different challenges in the workplace because of the ways they may be racialized.

I believe developing a more holistic understanding of identity in the workplace and developing concrete ways to address identity in the workplace (such as acknowledging the ways that people are impacted at work by events outside work) is an important first step towards creating workplaces that support many different identities.
