Course Description

Leading with Empathy and Allyship

This course provides actionable steps everyone can take to be better allies and advocates for people with underrepresented identities in the workplace.

You will learn ways to avoid unintentionally offending or harming people through biases and microaggressions, develop a deeper understanding of how to show empathy, learn examples of allyship and advocacy, and come away with some tangible and actionable steps you can take to be a better ally and advocate.

Understanding and Correcting Biases

This course takes learners on a deep dive into biases and the impact they can have. By identifying, naming, and defining many of the common biases we encounter in our daily lives, allies can take the first step towards change by reducing biases and the harm they can cause.

You will learn about the most common biases and how they may play out in the workplace as well as strategies for self-regulation to reduce your own biased behavior. You will begin to unlearn biased habits and develop an action plan to intervene when you witness biases around you.

Recognizing and Overcoming Microaggressions

This course guides learners to recognize verbal, nonverbal and environmental microaggressions. You’ll also learn the deep mental and physical impacts of microaggressions over time. By focusing on impact over intent, we build empathy for our colleagues and take action to prevent and reduce the harm caused by these acts of exclusion.

You will learn about many types of microaggressions and view scenarios showing how they can play out in the workplace. You will develop skills for slowing down your own behavior to reduce your own microaggressions and understand the most effective way to call others in to join you in these efforts.

Interrupting Microaggressions

This course takes the knowledge and skills to recognize microaggressions and equips learners to take action to interrupt them. By understanding the psychology of behavior change and practicing with scripts to make your impact match your intent, learners can reduce microaggressions and the harm they cause for themselves and those around them.

You will learn when and why it is appropriate to intervene in microaggressive behavior, how to build a safe culture where others are willing to learn and grow, and what you can say when you or others experience a microaggression in the moment.
